Is it REALLY About the Fabric or What You Can Do WITH the Fabric?!
I have spoken to many designers who tell me that they get their inspiration from fabrics. Now I do not doubt that this is true. But my question is, for how long can you continue to rely on the fabric as a source of inspiration for your designs…even if there are so many fabrics out there to work with. Or perhaps maybe I have this mindset because I was trained to first develop my concept and then find suitable fabrics to bring the designs to life. I even recall on one or two occasions, “creating” my own fabric when I couldn’t find fabrics suitable for the concept I had in mind. I even used spider webbing once to glue chiffon to a stiffer fabric to get the weight I wanted.
I also recall a project in my first year where we had to develop our own 3-meter long 3D fabric. Took me forever to sew the manually pleated ribbons in 2 colours onto the taffeta, and this was after I had sewn on the lace fabric. It was part of what made learning more challenging and interesting…. and part of what never bothered me if I went to the fabric store and could not find what I wanted to use. I’d simply create mine.
ARGH! The Dangers of that THING called Procrastination!
The first half of the first month of the New Year is already gone and it has only just dawned on me that no matter how long I put something off for or make excuses for my inability to do it, a task will neither go away nor will time wait for me to sort myself out!
Another interesting point on Wikipedia was how people responded or coped with procrastination:
- Avoidance: Where we avoid the locale or situation where the task takes place (e.g., a graduate student avoiding going to University).
- Distraction: Where we engage or immerse ourselves in other behaviors or actions to prevent awareness of the task (e.g., intensive videogame playing or Internet surfing)
- Trivialization: We reframe the intended but procrastinated task as being not that important (e.g., “I’m putting off going to the dentist, but you know what? Teeth aren’t that important.”).
- Downward counterfactuals: We compare our situation with those even worse (e.g., “Yes, I procrastinated and got a B- in the course, but I didn’t fail like one other student did.”). Upward counterfactual is considering what would have happened if we didn’t procrastinate.
- Humour: Making a joke of one’s procrastination, that the slapstick or slipshod quality of one’s aspirational goal striving is funny.
- External attributions: That the cause of procrastination is due to external forces beyond our control (e.g., “I’m procrastinating because the assignment isn’t fair”).
- Reframing: Pretending that getting an early start on a project is harmful to one’s performance and leaving the work to the last moment will produce better results (e.g., “I’m most creative at 4:00 AM in the morning without sleep.”).
- Denial: Pretending that procrastinatory behaviour is not actually procrastinating, but a task which is more important than the avoided one.
I won’t pretend I know what the answers are but I guess identifying the problem is the first step. I only got better at my deliverables when I realized it was a serious problem and I made a conscious effort throughout last year, thankfully so… until of course… I went into that “holiday” mode which I am finding myself hard to drag myself out of now…
I also found the following articles… perhaps they can help solve this problem. I’m sure there are loads more out there.

Here’s wishing me and everyone out there a lot of luck!
Cheers!

“How to Make Sure Your Ideas Make Sense” – by Scott Anthony
Every creative person needs an “advocate” rather than someone who will massage their egos and keep telling them what they want to hear or how fabulous their designs or business ideas are. Someone who will highlight errors and give honest constructive criticism. NOTE the word “constructive”… not just people who slam your work without giving ideas on the way forward. Those in my opinion are just a waste of time.
Lessons from The Book of Proverbs
6 July 2012:
Proverbs 6: 10-11; 16 – 19; 32.
16 – 19 are warnings on what God hates and 19 is just vereeee deep! Pretty hectic! But my fave just has to be 10-11:
10: “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep –
11: “So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man”.
7 July 2012:
Well, this chapter pretty much just discussed an encounter with “The Crafty Harlot”, obviously very symbolic. But if I had to choose a verse, it would have to be:
Proverbs 7: 4
“Say to wisdom, ‘You’re my sister,’ And call understanding your nearest kin”.
Oh… there was a verse in Proverbs 6 that just kept resonating within me and though it had nothing to do with work or a changed being, I just had to draw your attention to it.
Proverbs 6: 32
“Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul”
Very powerful right?! Okay then! Moving on!
8 July 2012:
Proverbs 8: 13, 17 & 35
13: “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate”.
17: “I love those who love me, And those who diligently seek me will find me”.
35: “For whoever finds me finds life. And obtains favor from the Lord.”
My interpretation of verse 17? When you are having serious issues, seek Him and He will lead you to a clear solution to the problem.
9 July 2012:
Proverbs 9:10
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding”.
Ahhhhhhh…… so THAT was where they got it from! Ok great! Now I know!
10 July 2012:
Ok well… this Chapter was just completely profound with LOTS of advice. Short of dubbing the whole chapter, I struggled to select the notable verses because they all just made so much sense. BUT I chose:
Proverbs 10: 4, 13, 17, 19, 22 & 26.
4: “He who has a slack hand becomes poor, But the hands of the diligent makes rich”.
13: “Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding, But a rod is for the back of him who is devoid of understanding”
17: “He who keeps instruction is in the way of life, But he who refuses instruction goes astray”
19: “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise”
22: “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it”
26: “As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, So is the lazy man to those who send him”.
Enough said! Don’t think I need to say more.
11 July 2012:
First HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my absolutely FAB mum!!! Wishing her lots of God’s guidance, blessings and FUN today & alwayz… 😀
Great! SO our proverbs for today:
Proverbs 11: 1, 24 – 26.
1: “Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord, But a just weight is His delight”.
24 – 26:
24: “There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty.
25: “The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.”
26: “The people will curse him who withholds grain, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it”
12 July 2012:
This one also has a lot of notable verses but I struggled to keep it down to:
Proverbs 12: 1, 8, 11, 14, 18, 24 & 27.
On the subject of hard work & the benefits of heeding correction.
1: “Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid”.
8: “Better is the one who is slighted but has a servant, Than he who honours himself but lacks bread.”
11: “He who tills his land will be satisfied with bread, But he who follows frivolity is devoid of understanding”
14: “A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, And the recompense of a man’s hands will be rendered to him”.
24: “The hand of the diligent will rule, But the lazy man will be put to forced labour”
27: “The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, But diligence is man’s precious possession”.
13 July 2012:
On the importance of guarding your tongue, hard work & correction:
Proverbs 13: 3, 4, 11, 16, 18, 19a, 20 & 24
3: “He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction”
4: “The soul of the lazy man desires, and has nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.”
11: “Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, But he who gathers by labour will increase”.
16: “Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool lays open his folly”
18: “Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction, But he who regards a rebuke will be honoured”
20: “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.”
But my absolute FAVE is: 19a
My FAVE:
… so for those who like to gist and gossip during work hours…..
15 July 2012:
Proverbs 15: 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, 19, 22, 27 & 32
1: “A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger”
2: “The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness”
5: “A fool despises his father’s instruction, But he who receives correction is prudent”.
7: “The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, But the heart of the fool does not do so”.
8: “Harsh discipline is for him who forsakes the way, And he who hates correction will die”
12: “A scoffer does not love one who will correct him, Nor will he go to the wise”
14: “The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, But the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness”.
16: “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, Than great treasure with trouble”
19: “The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns, But the way of the upright is a highway”
31: “He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding”.
My FAVE?!
Quite a lot right?! Ok you’ll understand why I’m spoilt for choice soon enough…
17 July 2012:
Proverbs 17: 5, 10, 12, 14, 18, 27 – 28.
This chapter and, in fact the subsequent ones made me burst into laughter at their description of “fools”… whoever they are… Enjoy the reference verses.
5: “He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished”
10: “Rebuke is more effective for a wise man than a hundred blows on a fool”.
12: “Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs, Rather than a fool in his folly”.
14: “The beginning of strife is like releasing water; Therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts”
18: “A man devoid of understanding shakes hands in a pledge, And becomes surety for his friend”
And my absolute favorites on watching your tongue! 27 – 28:
The question now though is… “Who is a fool?!” What is the biblical definition of a fool? Clearly one who is devoid of understanding… I’m thinking… Or is it someone who has no clue how to hold his tongue?! Food for thought!
18 July 2012:
Proverbs 18: 6 – 7; 9, 10, 15, 17, 20 & 21
6: “A fool’s lips enter into contention, And his mouth calls for blows”
7: “A fool’s mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul”
9: “He who is slothful in his work Is a brother to him who is a great destroyer”
10: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe”
15: “The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge”
17: “The first one to plead his cause seems right, Until his neighbor comes and examines him”
My absolute favorites on the power of the tongue:
24 July 2012:
Proverbs 24: 6, 10, 23, 29 & 30 – 34
6: “For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counsellors there is safety.”
10: “If you faint in the day of adversity, Your strength is small”. (Yup! You have to keep pushing on).
23: “These things also belong to the wise: It is not good to show partiality in judgement”
29: “Do not say: ‘I will do to him just as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work'”
30 – 34: Very key!
30: “I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;”
31: “And there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down”
32: “When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction:”
And then Proverbs…
Ok! So does this mean we have no right to express ourselves?! No! I think it is more a case of being slow to anger. But how about if not expressing yourself just really eats you up inside and the only way to let go is simply by venting all?! I know that is how I am able to cope with all the challenges around here, else bottling it all up means 1. You never get your work delivered by your vendors and 2. You just end up stressing and hurting yourself with all that pent up emotions. But then that’s just me! The Bible obviously holds more weight.
