The Appalling State of Customer Services!

The Appalling State of Customer Services!

Let me rephrase. The Appalling State of Customer Services in this environment!
I’m sorry but this is ranting and raving time!  I did warn you that it may happen sooner or later but it really is annoying!

Someone please explain to me why exactly I am paying for a service and when I complain about the service, I get attitude from the vendor like “errr…. how dare you complain about the service I just rendered to you”!  I mean like seriously?!  The typical vendor around here acts like they are doing you a favor when really the truth is you have paid for it!  Sometimes they forget that without customers, they would not be in business!

What exactly brought this on?!  I’ll tell you just now! >-(
http://tenerife-training.net/Tenerife-News-Cycling-Blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/expect-poor-customer-service-etiquette.gif
So in preparation for FEC 5, I paid for some sponsored online content to advertise the course.  An error was made in the content which I called the vendor’s attention to.  No biggie right?!  So imagine my shock when I got a mail from them; one which “reeked” of attitude to say the least.  Thinking I was, perhaps, overreacting, I forwarded the mail to a friend of mine asking his opinion and he confirmed that the mail was rude.  Now the normal me would have either sent a stinker or forwarded the mail to a higher authority in their management asking for an apology without batting an eyelid.  But seeing I am reading and learning a whole lot from The Book of Proverbs, it took every “ounce” (for lack of a better word) of energy to hold my “tongue” and let it go!  Like everything else in this environment, we just let go!  And that is what really irks me!

Ok let’s just assume the sender of the e-mail didn’t mean to be rude.  How about some basic training on e-mail etiquette?!  I know when I was in KPMG, we spent a whole lot of time reviewing and re-reviewing the contents of an e-mail before sending them out just to be sure we never passed across the wrong message to the reader.  Clearly if this person had reread the contents of the mail, they would have rewritten it.

Scenario 2!

You go to a bank and the disgruntled Customer Services personnel is frowning and answering your questions grudgingly like he was forced to sit behind the counter.  You even get customers coming in and cajoling the staff just so they can do what they were actually employed to do!  I know I have had to complain about a certain person in a certain branch of a popular bank who really has no business attending to customers.  The person constantly has a frown on their face and I always wondered why the person wasn’t relegated to the back room wearing a mask and counting money.  That way they can frown all they want and no one would notice.  Like seriously?!  If you don’t like your job then please quit!  Why do I have to beg you and call you Aunty or Uncle just so you can be decent to me?!  Interesting to note that customers on the Mainland are treated differently from customers on the Island!  Double Standards!

Gosh need you need to know the different vendors I deal with on a daily basis…. especially the creative ones who outrightly expect you to accept what they have given you without any questions asked.  Like hello?!  I know how particular I am about my work so I spend hours chatting to them about the deliverable and send a detailed line-by-line brief itemizing everything you could possibly want.

After all that effort you get the work and sometimes I have had to blink several times just to be sure it was my work they sent to me.  And when it dawns on me that it is my work, then the anger sets in and you wonder if they even read the brief you gave them.  And when they don’t deliver, they either try to intimidate you, accuse you of “micro-managing them”, threaten to back out of the work expecting you to beg them after you’ve paid them and they have constantly missed their deadline or worse, tell you no one has ever complained about their work.  And I’m thinking, get over yourself dude!

In the past I have had to cajole but after a while I was like oh like puh-lease!  Someone please explain to me why I have to beg someone to do the work I have paid them for?!  Or tip a parking attendant to park my car!  Like seriously in this environment, some people you tip even reject your tip because, in their opinion, it is too small!  Sometimes I cannot help but wonder if some employers knew how their staff handled their business.  I’m sure if they knew, they would have a fit!  And yet you wonder why there is such a moral decay in this society.

Often times people call me to make enquiries and then apologize to me for asking me questions about the Course they plan to register for, hoping they are not “disturbing” me. And I’m thinking… why would you think you are disturbing me?!  I always found it strange until I had a recent conversation with a student of mine.  Only then did it click that the average service personnel in this environment get irritable when they are asked questions.  Which brings me to:

Scenario 3!

Being accused of being “too finicky” simply because I asked for the measurements of a table.  Why?  Because the representative was too lazy to get a measuring tape!  He tells me “it’s a standard size”… like that is supposed to mean anything to me!  Standard size by whose standards?!   And THEN he tells me I’m too finicky.  Like how can you even tell a customer she is too finicky!  And oh!  When we asked them to close the door because there were a lot of mosquitoes in the waiting area, he apologizes and then wrecks the apology by adding “but we are all Africans now”.  We are all Africans so therefore we should be used to being chewed to bits by mosquitoes!  Maybe he’s used to it but sorry, I’m not!

Oh wait!  And how about staff talking about you amongst themselves like you are not even in the room.  Another common one!  Complete lack of courtesy!  I have had to tell people off several times for doing this.  And why do they get away with this?!  Simple!  Because the average individual would rather not say anything for fear of being embarrassed or being seen as a trouble maker.  I know the only time I get my work out is when I rant and rave!  So what do we do?  We just keep swallowing the crap and then complain that our government isn’t listening to our complaints and cries.  Ever heard of charity beginning at home?!  Why would someone listen to you when you refuse to listen to someone else?

Scenario 4!

Those that tell you “well there is nothing you can do about it’ like I don’t know my rights or something.  Or some concoct some ridiculous story like you just left primary school and you are there thinking… “does this guy really think I’m a mugu or something?!”  Why is he telling you this story?!  Because he cannot be bothered to do the work!  Gosh!  We really do indulge people in this environment.  What happened to the customer being king?!  Clearly it’s unheard of around here!

I get a visit from the ISP technicians and rather than accept that their base station is bad, they tell me the network in my building is bad.  I’m like.. oh… suddenly after 2 years.  The solution?!  The network is much better outside.  Right!  So I should stand outside in the rain to use my laptop?!  Makes me wonder why I even bothered!  After all, even their office had no reception.  I had to stand outside to test the modem to be sure it worked.

And then I get a call from the ISP asking why I refused to renew my subscription and I told them.  And she ends the call with “Thank you for choosing…”  I’m thinking?!  What?!  Did she even listen to me at all or did I just speak to an answering machine?!  I tell you why I have refused to renew my subscription (after paying for 3 months without enjoying a minute of the service), meaning I no longer use your company’s services and you end the call by saying:  “Thank you for choosing…”.  Ridiculous!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9K6QsP856rs/T1nBgkA7HrI/AAAAAAAABYE/NmCtIDz7Tzs/s1600/No-service.jpg
And how about our Emergency Services?!  Ha now THAT is another story entirely!  You will just keep waiting!  The day after the Dana Air crash I heard some violent sparks and some smoke coming from somewhere that seemed really close.  So I called “emergency services” and this “bored girl who sounded like I was disturbing her manicure session” picks up the phone and asks me to go closer to identify the source of the smoke before they can send the rescue team.  I was like what?!  Should you not be telling me to evacuate the area?!  We eventually found out it was the PHCN cable and residents had to let it burn to a “comfortable” height in the rain before putting out the fire themselves.

Sigh……. I can go on and on.  But really, what I find really upsetting is the fact that many of us just allow ourselves get exploited.  Despite being educated, we would rather suffer in silence.  No wonder people snap and the average person is stressed out around here.  My question is… when will this all end?!  I refuse to be made to feel guilty simply because I am asking for corrections to what what I am entitled to.  It is not a right, it is an obligation!

In all fairness though, some people have actually accepted correction and tried to make amends.  I would never forget a restaurant I went to… in fact 2 restaurants who gave me a complimentary meal / dessert to make up for bungling my order… even though my dates wondered why I complained.  In their opinion, I should have let it go… and one was actually wiling to pay for another meal.  Like seriously?!  I told him no ways and demanded to see the manager who was nice enough to prepare an even nicer order and kept checking on me to be sure I was pleased with it.  Only after then did I think… gosh there is still hope for us…

Interestingly enough, no prejudice to indigenes or anything, but I wonder if this only happened because the restaurants were run by foreigners?!  I don’t know.  But one thing I do know is many of the ill treatments I have received have come from Nigerians…. our fellow “compatriots”.  Which is very sad!

Yes a very long one but yes it had to be done!  So do I feel much better?!  Well… just a little bit!  Especially after seeing these jokes on poor customer service on the internet:

At least I have been able to let go of some steam!  Thank you for lending a “reading eye”!

Mucho gracias!  MWAH!  😀

Cheers!

PS!

Oh… here’s an interesting perspective from the other side…

I still believe, no matter what, the customer is king!  And this blog captures it perfectly:

Yes you do come across difficult ones and when you can’t handle them, offer them a sincere apology, an alternative or a refund.  Simple!  In a nice way of course… 😀  Perhaps we can all learn from this particular post on customer service!  I know many people around here need it!

Lessons from The Book of Proverbs

Lessons from The Book of Proverbs

Yes!  My first project in July!  I may not have updated my blog (and I wish I could do this through my phone…), I have been reading it and jotting down the notable verses.

Now like I said in my previous post, I am not a preacher or a pastor so I am not overly decoding the Book or anything.  That is a personal decision you have to make.  I am merely discussing verses I read that made a lot of sense to me and helped me in dealing with people and at work.

For example, Proverbs 6: 10-11 states:

10 “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep –
11 “So shall your poverty come upon you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.”

Clearly this needs no major decoding.  So sometimes when I feel lazy to work or procrastinate and I remember these verses, I jump up and get busy!  And of course, you know what happens when you jump up and get busy?  You deliver on your work and that translates into money (or a promotion if you so choose).  And remember that “Spare the rod and spoil the child?”  That is also from Proverbs.  It was amazing to realize that many words of advice I heard from older ones were taken from this.

Perhaps there’s some deeper meaning to the Book.  Errrr… let me rephrase that…  I’m sure there is a deeper meaning.  I stumbled upon some sites during my research which had some pretty hectic interpretations and for a second I thought “hmmnnn… should I really be doing this?!”  It seemed my angle was pretty shallow in comparison to what I had read.  But you know what?!  Since it’s something I always wanted to do, I decided to go ahead!  After all, many older ones speak in proverbs.  Only lately did I realize some of them came from this Book.  They always sounded different in Yoruba.

So open your mind, sit down, relax and journey with me throughout the month of July as I share with you words of wisdom from the Book of Proverbs with or without my interpretation from the New King James Version.  When my friend and I did this a few months ago, we each had to choose one notable verse and when we both hit the same one, we gave each other a pat on the back.  Almost like the game jinx. Now that I think about it, we should even have exchanged presents.  Like minds eh?!

So anywayz, let the words begin!  Enjoy them!

1 July 2012:

This had quite a few like 17, 19 & 33 but I had to settle for:

Proverbs 1: 6 – 7

6:  “To understand a proverb and an enigma, The words of the wise and their riddles.
7:  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction”

(Where did we ever get “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom from?!  Which Version did that come from?!)

2 July 2012:

Proverbs 2: 3; 5-6.

3:  “Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding,”
5:  “Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God”
6:  “For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding”

3 July 2012:

Proverbs 3: 5-6

5:  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
6:  “In all Your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths”

I can definitely tell you that things only started making a lot of sense in my business when I cried out for help.

4 July 2012:

Proverbs 4: 5; 7

5:  “Get wisdom!  Get understanding!  Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth”
7:  “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom.  And in all your getting, get understanding”.

5 July 2012:

Proverbs 5: 21

“For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, And He ponders all his paths.”

6 July 2012:

Proverbs 6: 10-11; 16 – 19; 32.

16 – 19 are warnings on what God hates and 19 is just vereeee deep!  Pretty hectic!  But my fave just has to be 10-11:

10:  “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep –
11:  “So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man”.

7 July 2012:

Well, this chapter pretty much just discussed an encounter with “The Crafty Harlot”, obviously very symbolic.  But if I had to choose a verse, it would have to be:

Proverbs 7: 4

“Say to wisdom, ‘You’re my sister,’ And call understanding your nearest kin”.

Oh… there was a verse in Proverbs 6 that just kept resonating within me and though it had nothing to do with work or a changed being, I just had to draw your attention to it.

Proverbs 6: 32

“Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding;  He who does so destroys his own soul”

Very powerful right?!  Okay then!  Moving on!

8 July 2012:

Proverbs 8: 13, 17 & 35

13:  “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate”.

17:  “I love those who love me, And those who diligently seek me will find me”.

35:  “For whoever finds me finds life. And obtains favor from the Lord.”

My interpretation of verse 17?  When you are having serious issues, seek Him and He will lead you to a clear solution to the problem.

9 July 2012:

Proverbs 9:10

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding”.

Ahhhhhhh…… so THAT was where they got it from!  Ok great!  Now I know!

10 July 2012:

Ok well… this Chapter was just completely profound with LOTS of advice.  Short of dubbing the whole chapter, I struggled to select the notable verses because they all just made so much sense.  BUT I chose:

Proverbs 10:  4, 13, 17, 19, 22 & 26.

4:   “He who has a slack hand becomes poor, But the hands of the diligent makes rich”.

13:  “Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding, But a rod is for the back of him who is devoid of understanding”

17:  “He who keeps instruction is in the way of life, But he who refuses instruction goes astray”

19:  “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise”

22:  “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it”

26:  “As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, So is the lazy man to those who send him”.

Enough said!  Don’t think I need to say more.

11 July 2012:

First HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my absolutely FAB mum!!!  Wishing her lots of God’s guidance, blessings and FUN today & alwayz… 😀

Great!  SO our proverbs for today:

Proverbs 11: 1, 24 – 26.

1:  “Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord, But a just weight is His delight”.

24 – 26:

24:  “There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty.
25:  “The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.”
26:  “The people will curse him who withholds grain, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it”

12 July 2012:

This one also has a lot of notable verses but I struggled to keep it down to:

Proverbs 12:  1, 8, 11, 14, 18, 24 & 27.

On the subject of hard work & the benefits of heeding correction.

1:  “Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid”.

8:  “Better is the one who is slighted but has a servant, Than he who honours himself but lacks bread.”

11:  “He who tills his land will be satisfied with bread, But he who follows frivolity is devoid of understanding”

14:  “A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, And the recompense of a man’s hands will be rendered to him”.

24:  “The hand of the diligent will rule, But the lazy man will be put to forced labour”

27:  “The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, But diligence is man’s precious possession”.

13 July 2012:

On the importance of guarding your tongue, hard work & correction:

Proverbs 13:  3, 4, 11, 16, 18, 19a, 20 & 24

3:  “He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction”

4:  “The soul of the lazy man desires, and has nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.”

11:  “Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, But he who gathers by labour will increase”.

16:  “Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool lays open his folly”

18:  “Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction, But he who regards a rebuke will be honoured”

20:  “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.”

But my absolute FAVE is: 19a

19a:  “A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul” – YES!  It sure is! 😀

14 July 2012:

Proverbs 14: 4, 6, 7, 12, 17, 21, 23, 26, 29, 30, 31 & 33
4:  “Where no oxen are, the trough is clean; But much increase comes by the strength of an ox.”

6:  “A scoffer seeks wisdom and does not find it, But knowledge is easy to him who understands.”

7:  “Go from the presence of a foolish man, When you do not perceive in him the lips of knowledge.”

17:  “A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, And a man of wicked intentions is hated”

21:  “He who despises his neighbour sins; But he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he”.
26:  “In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge”

29:  “He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, But he who is impulsive exalts folly”

30:  “A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones”.

31:  “He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, But he who honors Him who has mercy on the needy”.

33:  Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding, but what is in the heart of fools is made known”.

My FAVE:

23:  “In all labour there is profit, But idle chatter only leads to poverty”

… so for those who like to gist and gossip during work hours…..

15 July 2012:

Proverbs 15: 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, 19, 22, 27 & 32

1:  “A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger”

2:  “The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness”

5:  “A fool despises his father’s instruction, But he who receives correction is prudent”.

7:  “The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, But the heart of the fool does not do so”.

8:  “Harsh discipline is for him who forsakes the way, And he who hates correction will die”

12:  “A scoffer does not love one who will correct him, Nor will he go to the wise”

14:  “The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, But the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness”.

16:  “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, Than great treasure with trouble”

19:  “The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns, But the way of the upright is a highway”

31:   “He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding”.

My FAVE?!

22:  “Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counsellors they are established”

Also remember though that “too many cooks spoils the broth”.  So clearly this has to be done with wisdom.

16 July 2012:

Proverbs 16: 1, 3, 7, 8, 9, 18, 19, 22, 25, 26 & 32.

Quite a lot right?!  Ok you’ll understand why I’m spoilt for choice soon enough…

1:  “The preparations of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord”

3:  “Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established”

7:  “When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

8:  “Better a little with righteousness, Than vast revenues without justice”

9:  “A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps”

18- 19:

18:  “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall”.
19:  “Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.”

22:  “Understanding is a wellspring of life to him who has it.  But the correction of fools is folly”.

25:  “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death”.

26:  “The person who labours, labours for himself, For his hungry mouth drives him on”.

32:  “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city”

See?!  Which one would you have picked huh?!

17 July 2012:

Proverbs 17: 5, 10, 12, 14, 18, 27 – 28.

This chapter and, in fact the subsequent ones made me burst into laughter at their description of “fools”… whoever they are…  Enjoy the reference verses.

5:  “He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished”

10:  “Rebuke is more effective for a wise man than a hundred blows on a fool”.

12:  “Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs, Rather than a fool in his folly”.

14:  “The beginning of strife is like releasing water; Therefore stop  contention before a quarrel starts”

18:  “A man devoid of understanding shakes hands in a pledge, And becomes surety for his friend”

And my absolute favorites on watching your tongue!  27 – 28:

27:  “He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit”.

28:  “Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive”

The question now though is… “Who is a fool?!”  What is the biblical definition of a fool?  Clearly one who is devoid of understanding… I’m thinking…  Or is it someone who has no clue how to hold his tongue?!  Food for thought!

18 July 2012:

Proverbs 18: 6 – 7; 9, 10, 15, 17, 20 & 21

6:  “A fool’s lips enter into contention, And his mouth calls for blows”
7:  “A fool’s mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul”

9:  “He who is slothful in his work Is a brother to him who is a great destroyer”

10:  “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe”

15:  “The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge”

17:  “The first one to plead his cause seems right, Until his neighbor comes and examines him”

My absolute favorites on the power of the tongue:

20:  “A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; From the produce of his lips he shall be filled”

21:  “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit”.

Simply confess  it, believe it and it will be yours!  Tried, tested & trusted!  Works every time!

19 July 2012:

Proverbs 19: 5, 11, 15 , 17, 21 & 24

5:  “A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies will not escape”

17:  “He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, And He will pay back what he has given”

21:  “There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel – that will stand”

My funniest verse in this Chapter:

“A lazy man buries his hand in the bowl, And will not so much as bring it to his mouth again”

Goodness!  Can someone be that lazy?! Lol… (I know I know… it is not meant to be taken literally but still…)

20 July 2012:

Proverbs 20: 3-4, 5, 13, 17, 19, 21, 24 & 27

3:  “It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel”
4:  “The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing”

5:  “Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water, But a man of understanding will draw it out”

13:  “Do not love sleep lest you come to poverty; Open your eyes and you will be satisfied with bread”

17:  “Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel”

19:  “He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; Therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips”

21:  “An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning Will not be blessed at the end”.

24:  “A man’s steps are of the Lord; How then can a man understand his own way?”

25:  “The spirit of a man id the lamp of the Lord, Searching all the inner depths of his heart”.

21 July 2012:

Proverbs 21: 3, 4, 17, 23-25

3:  “To do righteousness and justice Is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.”

4:  “A haughty look, a proud heart, And the plowing of the wicked are sin”.

17:  “He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich”

23:  “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles”.
24:  “A proud and haughty man – ‘Scoffer’ is his name; He acts with arrogant pride”
25:  “The desire of the lazy man kills him, For his hands refuse to labour”

Well at least NOW we know who a scoffer is.  “arrogant pride”… hmmnnn…

BUT!  My absolute FAVE…

5:  “The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty”.

22 July 2012:

Proverbs 22:  1, 3, 13, & 15

1:  “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold”

3:  “A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, But the simple pass on and are punished”

13:  “The lazy man says, ‘There is a lion outside!  I shall be slain in the streets!”  – (lol! I’ll hold my peace… Was about to make a funny remark on this one).

15:  “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him”

My absolute FAVE: Verse 29:

29: “Do you see a man who excels in his work?  He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men”.

23 July 2012:

Proverbs 23: 4-5; 9, 12-13, 17, 21, 23 & 29 – 35

I love verse 4:

“Do not overwork to be rich; Because of your own understanding, cease!”

5:  “Will you set your eyes on that which is not?  For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven”.

9:  “Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words”.

12:  “Apply your heart to instruction, And your ears to words of knowledge.”
13:  “Do not withhold correction from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die”

17:  “Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day;”

21:  “For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.”

23:  “Buy the truth and do not sell it, Also wisdom, and instruction and understanding”

29 – 35 is pretty long but it is a serious warning to those who drink.  It pretty much says stay away from drinking!

24 July 2012:

Proverbs 24:  6, 10, 23, 29 & 30 – 34

6:  “For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

10:  “If you faint in the day of adversity, Your strength is small”.  (Yup!  You have to keep pushing on).

23:  “These things also belong to the wise:  It is not good to show partiality in judgement”

29:  “Do not say: ‘I will do to him just as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work'”

30 – 34:  Very key!

30:  “I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;”
31:  “And there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down”
32:  “When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction:”

33:  “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest;”
34:  “So shall your poverty come like a prowler, And your need like an armed man”.

My absolute FAVE!

25 July 2012:

Proverbs 25: 6-7, 8-10, 11-12, 14, 16, 17, 21-22, 28

On humility:

6: “Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, And do not stand in the place of the great;
7:  For it is better that he say to you, ‘Come up here,’ Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom your eyes have seen”

On patience & wisdom:

8:  “Do not go hastily to court; For what you will do in the end, When your neighbour has put you to shame?
9:   Debate your case with your neighbour, And do not disclose the secret to another;
10: Lest he who hears it expose your shame, And your reputaiton be ruined”

On correction:

11:  “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver,
12:  “Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold Is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear”

21:  “If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
22:  For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, And the Lord will reward you”

And my favourite:

28:  “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls”

26 July 2012:

Proverbs 26: 14-16; 17, 20 & 27

14:  “As a door turns on its hinges, So does the lazy man on his bed.”
15:  “The lazy man buries his hand in the bowl; It wearies him to bring it back to his mouth.”
16:  “The lazy man is wiser in his own eyes Than seven men who can answer sensibly.”

17:  “He who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own Is like one who takes a dog by the ears.”

20:  “Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.”

27:  “Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him.”

27 July 2012:

Proverbs 27: 1, 2, 5, 14, 17, 18, 19, 21, 23-27

1:  “Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth”

5:  “Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed”

14:  “He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, It will be counted a curse to him”. (Lol… this is pretty funny!  All them people screaming “k’aro o ji’re” at like 5am in the morning – take note!)

17:  “As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend”

18:  “Whoever keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit; So he who waits on his master will be honoured”.

19:  “As in water face reflects face, So a man’s heart reveals the man”

21:  “The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, And a man is valued by what others say of him”

23:  “Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, And attend to your herds;
24:  “For riches are not forever, Nor does a crown endure to all generations.
25:  “When the hay is removed, and the tender grass shows itself, And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in,
26:  “The lambs will provide your clothing, And the goats the price of a field;
27:  “You shall have enough goats’ milk for your food, For the food of your household, And the nourishment of your maidservants”

28 July 2012:

Proverbs 28: 9, 13, 19, 21, 23

21:  “To show partiality is not good, Because for a piece of bread a man will transgress”.

23:  “He who rebukes a man will find more favour afterward Than he who flatters with the tongue” (Yes but please this does not mean you go around just “rebuking” anyone anyhow).

And my fave!  Verse 19:

19:  “He who tills his land will have plenty of bread, But h who follows frivolity will have poverty enough!
29 July 2012:

Proverbs 29: 11, 15, 17 & 20

First!  A Happy Birthday to my sister!!!  Wishing her lots of fun today and always… and of course lots of God’s guidance, blessings, wisdom and understanding always!

And then Proverbs…

15:  “The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother”

17:  “Correct your son and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul”.

20:  “Do you see a man hasty in his words?  There is more hope for a fool than for him” [:-(]

And my fave and perhaps most controversial at the same time:

11:  “A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back”

Ok!  So does this mean we have no right to express ourselves?!  No!  I think it is more a case of being slow to anger.  But how about if not expressing yourself just really eats you up inside and the only way to let go is simply by venting all?!  I know that is how I am able to cope with all the challenges around here, else bottling it all up means 1.  You never get your work delivered by your vendors and 2.  You  just end up stressing and hurting yourself with all that pent up emotions.  But then that’s just me!  The Bible obviously holds more weight.

30 July 2012:

Proverbs 30: 5-6, 7-9; 15-16 & 24-28

5:  “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him
6:  “Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar”

15a:  “The leech has two daughters, Give and Give!” (Lol!  Nice one!)
15b:  “There are three things that are never satisfied, Four never say, “Enough”:
16:  “The grave, The barren womb, The earth that is not satisfied with water – And the fire never says, ‘Enough’!”

24:  “There are four things which are little on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise:
25:  “The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their food in the summer;
26:  “The rock badgers are a feeble folk, Yet they make their homes in the crags;
27:  “The locusts have no king, Yet they advance in ranks;
28:  “The spider skillfully grasps with its hands, And it is in kings’ palaces”.

And my absolute favourite which doubles as a prayer:  Verses 7-9:

7:  “Two things I request of You (Deprive me not before I die):
8:  “Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches – Feed me with the food allotted to me;
9:  “Lest I be full and deny You, And say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God”

31 July 2012:

Proverbs 31: 3-5, 9, 10, 25, 28 & 30-31

3:  “Do not give your strength to women, Nor your ways to that which destroys kings
4:  “It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes intoxicating drink;
5:  “Lest they drink and forget the law, And pervert the justice of all the afflicted.”

9:  “Open your mouth, judge righteously, And plead the cause of the poor and the needy”

And for the women in our lives:

10:  “Who can find a virtuous wife?  For her worth is far above rubies”.
25:  “Strength and honour are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come”
28:  “Her children rise and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her:”

And of course my fave… Verses 30 – 31:

30:  “Charm and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
31:  “Give her the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates”.

Excellent!  And that’s a wrap folks!  THE perfect wrap to an excellent month and an excellent Book.  It was a long one but I definitely learnt a lot, even more so now than the first time I read it.

Hope you all had a great month!  Here’s wishing you a very pleasant month of August and the very best for the rest of the year!

Cheers!

The Importance of Investing in Yourself…

The Importance of Investing in Yourself…

FINALLY!!!!  It appears I’m back on board!  I’m trying out a new ISP and I sincerely hope this one’s much better than the last one.  Goodness!  The past few weeks have been SUCH a challenge!

Great!  So here I am talking about the importance of investing in yourself today.

I would like to discuss the benefits of investing in the knowledge required to set up any fashion establishment AND implore anyone who would like to run a business on the importance of getting the requisite skills and the relevant knowledge necessary to operate in that industry.
So there I was going through my previous blog, t-twayne.blogspot.com, when I stumbled upon one of my favourite posts, “Do You Really Need to Study Fashion Design to Succeed in the Fashion Industry?” http://www.t-twayne.blogspot.com/2008/02/do-you-really-need-to-study-fashion.html
A pretty freaky image yes I know but please focus on the message passed across in the picture.

Now when I wrote the post, I knew going to fashion school was the best decision I ever made.  BUT I still felt the need to challenge that mindset, after all… some of the richest men in the world today dropped out of school.  In fact, Ralph Lauren didn’t go to fashion school yet made loads of money from the fashion industry.  So why exactly is getting the knowledge in the chosen field necessary I wonder?!

Truth is, yes many of these people may have dropped out of school or other forms of formal education but many of them, if not all, must have invested a lot of time and money getting all the knowledge they possibly could to excel in their chosen field.  Take for example, Dr Maduka of the Coscharis Group.  Yes he may not have completed Elementary 3 BUT he spent years as an apprentice learning all the tricks of his trade and spent time studying his industry before setting up in his own.

Let’s bring it home to the fashion industry.  Case Study:  Mrs Nike Ogunlesi of Ruff N Tumble.  She also dropped out of school but had spent years working with her mother and therefore thoroughly understood the trade.  Needless to say that every speaker at the  Creative Business Expo 2012, Lola Maja-Okojevoh of Sacred Group, Orighoye Dore-Job of Nylah’s Catering and Babasola Bamiro of Babz Bamiro Photography and, of course I :-D, left promising degrees and career paths to pursue completely different fields BUT still went back to school to get the relevant knowledge before broaching their new areas.

NOW!  I have spoken to many designers who believe their love for fashion and the fact that they can sketch is really all they need to start a fashion business.  HA!  I only wish.  Yes your love for fashion goes a long way…. it is all that will keep you going when the going gets tough but it is not enough!  Even those who studied it in formal environments, backed with our work experience STILL face those challenges.  After all, that’s why even the most successful businesses like Coca-cola still spend so much time and money rebranding themselves.  But you know what?!  When we hit the roadblocks, we knew when to bow out and choose different routes.I also say, when you thoroughly understand fashion, your clients will feed off the confidence and enthusiasm you exude when you talk about your product or service.  More often than not, people want to patronise those they can trust and who seem to know what they are talking about.  They also want people to advise them based on informed decisions and conclusions reached rather than just gut feeling.  If you understand fashion and colours for example, you can explain why certain colours will not work for certain people and certain spaces simply because you understand the psychological effects of colour.  Those who attended FEC 3 will tell you that.

I recall extracts from a 4-part series from my church’s sermons, “The 7 Principles Jews Teach Their Children” and the reason for the success of the Jews.  I learnt a lot from those cds and have listened to them so many times, I know them by heart.  I have even bought them as gifts for people simply because it highlights many things small businesses often neglect and take for granted.  One of the most important things I gained from sermons was the fact that Jews ALWAYS invested in the knowledge or gained relevant work experience in whatever field they chose to operate in.  They would rather take a loan to fund their education than buy expensive cars or live in expensive houses.  Needless to say that almost every successful business person would tell you that they read, read and read, conduct lots of research to broaden their minds and attend various seminars relevant to their chosen fields.

So why oh why do we fashion designers in this environment not do the same?!  Why do we hesitate to register for courses or buy books or conduct research on the internet.  Why do we rush into setting up our businesses without studying our environment or conducting proper research before we set up.  We need to understand the processes involved in setting up the businesses and that is why I decided to run the Fashion Entrepreneurship Courses.  Yes it is costing me a lot to run the courses but for me, every single time a designer tells me they are quitting, it breaks my heart because I know there is so much money to make from this industry.  If only they were better prepared for the challenges they would face and there are a lot of them.

What many of us concern ourselves with is learning how to sew…. and yes it is important but trust me, it is the least of our problems.  Yes we need to learn how to sew but not because we should actually sew but because the knowledge is important to guide our production team.  We need to focus more on running our businesses and conducting research and spending more time planning and developing our product than rushing into setting up or bothering about PR and lookbooks.   I have seen so many people who loved fashion quit the industry out of frustration.  Why?!  Simply because they made some avoidable mistakes.  Hey!  Even I made a lot of mistakes with all the formal education and accounting background I had but I was able to realize the mistakes I made early on in the game and backtrack.

So what am I saying in a nutshell?  Simple!

1.  Spend more time investing in the knowledge, either a formal or informal education, registering for relevant courses or even surfing the internet.  You will be amazed what the University of Google has to offer.

2.  Focus on turning that amazing love and passion of yours for fashion into a viable business!  As my friend always says, “Unless the Outcome is Income…” – passion to me is completely useless!  So even if it is a mere hobby, think about making some money from it, even if it is just to cover your costs.

3.  Proverbs 21:5

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty;
but those of everyone who is hasty surely to poverty”.

What does this mean?!  Do not rush into setting up your fashion business.  Study the industry and form strategic networks necessary to establish the business in the most cost-effective manner.  I spent 2 years trying to understand the industry so I could know how to plug into the industry and where to position myself.  And it is still work in progress.  Learn as much as you can and apply the knowledge and principles of whatever work experience you have, even if you are a banker or IT specialist, in your fashion establishment.

Great then!  That’s my 2 cents for today!  Remember, knowledge is power!  Trust me, it will be time and money well spent!

Oh PS.  I stumbled upon these sites when searching for images on the net.  I’m sure they’ll help you.

Lessons Learnt from Dr Cosmas Maduka of the Coscharis Group @ the TREM VI Business Academy (13 May 2012)

Lessons Learnt from Dr Cosmas Maduka of the Coscharis Group @ the TREM VI Business Academy (13 May 2012)

Hello Everyone!!!  Hope you had a great start to the week.  Apologies for the staggered posts.  I am still having major internet issues and still on the hunt for the perfect ISP.  As soon as I am sorted, I’ll be back with my regular posts!  I have lots of them lined up! 😀

Okay great!  This was my Sunday post and I’ll make it really brief as I absolutely must give you the new information on FEC 4!!!  I am mighty excited!  BUT before then, let me share with you some vital lessons I learnt from one of the most humble people I have ever had the privilege of listening to and more importantly, learning about business from using biblical principles.  I’m sure this will help our fashion businesses no matter how small or big our businesses are.

So I was invited by my absolutely fabulous mentor to the Business Academy which holds at his church, TREM VI, Lekki Phase 1, once a quarter.  At the Academy, many businessowners and successful entrepreneurs are invited to share their experiences with the congregation in order to motivate us into thinking big.

So anyway, despite the rain, I headed out thinking I’d spend only an hour thereabouts but ended up staying till 1pm.  I am SO GLAD I did and I just had to share this with you!

Meet Dr Cosmas Maduka, Chairman & CEO of the Coscharis Group, an uneducated man who pulled himself out of poverty and became a billionaire simply by working hard, believing in himself and “confessing” himself to riches.  For those who haven’t heard of him, you may read some of his stories here:

Forget the fact that his story was touching, what struck me was his emphasis on the power of words.  He kept hammering on the power of words.  To him, “a word is a thought expressed”!  And THAT is exactly what our theme of the year is at my church.  Words and positive confessions.  And you know what?!  It works!  I have first hand experience.  Tried, tested and trusted!

So what advice did Dr Maduka have to give us young entrepreneurs?!  His “10 Commandments of Small Business Enterprise”.  And here they are [with of course my comments underneath 😉 ]:

1.  Pick & remain focused on a business you understand well.

For me, it’s about spending more time learning the business than rushing into the business.  Dr Maduka spent a long time as an apprentice learning the intricacies of the business before rushing into it and was, therefore, able to use the knowledge gained as a competitive edge over others and he gave practical examples of how he did it.

2.  Thoroughly understand your market.  (Need I say more?!)

3.  Look for and hire professional managers

Obviously when you can afford to do so.  You need to hire people with the relevant work experience, particularly with start up companies and not just those with the certificates.  This I learnt from a sermon at church “The 7 Principles Jews Teach Their Children”.

4.  Put in place a strong financial and administrative control.

Very important but very difficult for young business owners.  Many people think we small business owners steal from our businesses and dip our hands into the business coffers to sustain ourselves.  Well in my case, my business steals from me if you ask me.  Every dime I make goes into the business… including other monies I make from, e.g. dividend payments.  It is ridiculous and I battled with this for ages.  After all, I have paid my dues and deserve to go out for drink with my friends once in a while or watch a movie to relax.  UNTIL my accountant friend told me what to do about it and when I first paid myself a salary, I was ecstatic!  And now I don’t feel so guilty anymore when I use company funds for personal runs because I just net it off my cash take home every month!  And that is a tip for you! You can thank me later! 😀

5. Constantly research the market to confirm the continued relevancy of your pricing and your product to prevent your business from being obsolete.

Need I say more.  Most of us rush into business without understanding the industry, who the players are and what everyone else is doing.  I was also guilty of this but I learnt early enough that I could not bypass the research process.

6.  Do not spend too much money on office space and self-serving activities.  You need liquid cash to run the business!

Spot on!  My take on this is many of us are too concerned about branding ourselves when we have no product to brand.  We focus on PR, fashion shows or getting office spaces on the Island when there are cheaper alternatives so the cost savings could be diverted to further developing our product.  My ready question for designers are… ok so you now have the orders from your fashion shows.  Do you have the capacity or the resources to deliver on those orders?!  Exactly!  If you must spend on “tooshing” up your office, know that it must have the capacity to directly influence sales.

7.  Have a business strategic plan and constantly review it.

My take on this is, many of us are concerned about writing business plans and I can tell you for free that I really do not have the time to sit and write one or the funds to employ someone to write it for me.  But what I do have is a life plan for my business to guide me and not for investment purposes.  My road map and it reinforced my decision to leave the bespoke route when I realized how far I had deviated from my original plan.

8.  Keep proper & complete records of all transactions!

HA!  I cannot overemphasize this enough!  Even I have to discipline myself despite my accounting background and I go about with a small book and record even the N20s I spend.  And if you are too busy to record these expenses on the computer, get an accounting student or even a young school leaver who can assist you in the early days.  I know most students are looking for extra cash.)

9.  Make sure there is a job description for every position and find people to fill them.

Very important though I have been writing one for my assistant for the past 6 months.  I kind of stopped when I got to like page 25 or something but it is still work in progress and I still discussed it with him last week.  So we are both clear on issues!

10.  Set performance standards for yourself and constantly measure yourself against them.

Here again is where my life plan comes into place and the targets I set for myself.  Not sure I have done badly this year but I know I can do better!

SO!  There you have it!  Phew!  I didn’t expect this post to be this long but well it’s done now!  Here are some pictures I took of him.  If you want to know more about his success story, you can buy his book “From Trials to Triumphs – The Coscharis Story”.

I think the cds of his lecture are also available for sale at TREM VI.  I’ll find out how you can get them if you  are interested.

And I also think you should get this cd as well.  It was the first TREM VI Business Academy cd I ever listened to.  The story of Mrs Ayo Megbope, the owner of No Left Overs, a lady who started a successful business from selling moin moin.  Another inspiring story which left me wowed when I met with her.  You can read up on it here.

Great!  My deed is done!

Have a great day all!

Changing Mindsets!

Changing Mindsets!

Often times I have wondered why we designers complain about so much and yet refuse other viable options that are available simply because of certain mindsets.  I’ll give you an example…

The typical complaint with designers and fashion entrepreneurs in this industry are local tailors or lack of competent machinists to work with.  Of all the “challenges” I asked designers to send me during the Designers Connect gathering, predominant on the list is the issue of tailors.  From late coming to bad work to bad work ethics.

I have worked with local tailors in the past and I know the edge I had above them was my ability to sew and other viable options.  Where one left me in the lurch, I would simply call my local tailor to assist me churn out my work based on patterns I gave her and together we would churn out the work.  Other times when I was less busy, I tested her competency by sending a simple design for e.g. a boubou and asking her to do her normal “free-hand cutting” on a piece of paper so I could have a template to work with.  And she always obliged.  Where she went wrong, I would correct her.  Why was I doing all this?  I was trying to work out a process where she could easily create simple patterns and get my machinists to sew up the toile for testing.  Of course I paid her for her efforts.

Why am I saying all this?!  I have realized that designers complain without wanting to do their part or even entertain suggestions to current work procedures.  Due to the mindsets we have, we are averse to change.  Listen!  We need to change our mindsets and break up the production process!  You cannot own or be directly involved in the whole production process from start to finish!  It is simply not sustainable in the long run.  I know!  I have been there!  You cannot expect to get a different result if you keep doing the same thing over and over again!  In the same manner, how can you expect a normal local tailor, who is not super human, to churn out so much work in so little time and with much accuracy.

First we need to train our staff no matter how experienced we think they are.  Why?!  Simply because work cultures are different and they need to understand your work process, especially if they have limited skills.  Like hello?!  How many months do fresh graduates or even experienced staff spend in training school for banks and accounting firms before they start to work.  I know when I first started at KPMG, we were at a retreat for 3 weeks learning the KPMG culture and basic accounting to prepare us for work.  Even those who were already in the system still had to go through the orientation programme called KBAC.

So why oh why do we not train our tailors and expect them to deliver fabulous work?!  How can we get a tailor today and throw him on the job without first training them to our standards and then complain that they are incompetent.  Are we forgetting we also run businesses?!  No matter how experienced you are, production methods vary in different establishments!  What you think is great might be awful to me so it is my job to ensure my tailor delivers good work… except of course he has simply refused to learn!  And oh…. let us also not forget the fact that if you can break down, so can your local tailor!  I know… I have been there and also made these same mistakes.

When I first started out, I just found good tailors, ran a small test for them and just threw them on the job.  Of course, I suffered dearly for it when I had to redo some garments and other times, the tailors would burn them!  I sat down and began to review my methods and almost slapped myself!  First I never trained them.  These tailors were used to working with ankara and I was working with wool for suits.  They were used to high temperatures during their production almost to the point of “cremating” the fabric but it never affected the ankara fabric.  Of course they would use the same heat to steam wool which would obviously burn!  After searching deep within and realizing the fault was with me, I sat down to think of how things could work better.

I compared my business to the places I had worked and almost beat myself up.  How could I have learnt all these things without applying them?!  And that was when I changed my strategy and it worked.  Yes, it took a while because most people I worked with were averse to patterns but eventually, seeing they failed all their tests, they conformed.
You know what I think the solution to this tailor problem is?!  Simple!  Break up the  production process, let them handle only a fraction of the process, perhaps only the “cutting”.  What I mean is if you have a good tailor, get him to do only the cutting, and then take it to someone else to join for you…. or better still… get joiners in your production unit and start a small production line and get them to join it for you!  And I know it works!

One of the easiest ways to retain staff in my opinion is to teach people limited skills in certain areas and get them to rise through the system.. Sort of like a promotion.  I know the day I asked my local tailor to create a pattern for me, he was ecstatic because I was giving him a chance.  Of course he bungled but at least he realized he was moving up the ranks and my plan was to get him to start assisting me with pattern-making so I could find joiners he could oversee because he already understood my construction methods.

I think more of what designers in the industry need are machinists rather than tailors.  And what are machinists?!  Simple!  They are called joiners in the local industry?  Someone who can run a machine and who can sew straight stitches.  I tell you I believe that is the only way forward!  Why do I think so?!
  • First they have limited skills so there’s really nowhere else for them to go.
  • Second, you can begin a form of promotion system where they move on to the next stage (which is essentially more responsibility) after they have perfected their sewing skills.  That way they also feel they are rising up the ranks.
  • Third, you begin a form of production line where different people know their areas of responsibilities and become specialized in those areas.  You can rotate them but ONLY when they have earned the right.

So please please please start thinking about this.  If you, however, keep searching for a good tailor so you can burden him with all your work, guess what?!  He will be over-burdened and leave you probably for the next best thing which is another better paying job or to set up his own establishment.  Or hold you to ransom.  One person should not handle a whole garment from start to finish.

People wonder why things seem to work in other countries?!  Simple!  Division of Labour!  This is how proper factories operate worldwide.  I recall during my internship programme about 50 people, give or take, worked on a pair of trousers.  And guess what?!  Some didn’t even know where their work ended up in the whole garment.  I found it surprising but it made sense.  They only sew straight lines and where they do not show up, you can simply get someone else who can sew a straight line and take her place.  And of course since they know they can easily be replaced, they stay… in fact some had been there for 25 years!

No you do not have to have up to 50 people.  You can set up a small production line with just 3 people.  When I started, I created the patterns, one person sewed the garment, the other person sewed the lining and the third just did all the running around like the steaming, tacking, buttons, etc.  They worked as a team and that way, we could identify problems before delivery to the customer.  Yes it was frustrating and a lot of hard work at first but after a while, things became much better.

So how can you as an aspiring designer get this system to work for you?!  Simple!
  1. Get some basic formal or informal training in pattern making and garment construction so when you relate with your staff, they know you know your stuff.
  2. Do not rely on your tailor for everything.  Get him/her to only your “cutting” and even the pinning.  Of course you do your proper homework by giving him proper well labelled drawings and fabric swatches not just some sketches of just the front of your garments and expect him to know what is going on at the back. How would he know?!
  3. Get machinists who you have tested and trained to sew the seams together.  Where you get stuck, call your tailor to explain it to you.  That’s what my staff did and I would explain the stuff over the phone to them simply because I created the patterns and they had detailed pictures to assist them.   And you take it from there.

So in conclusion, I think we designers need a reality check and need to get over ourselves.  We need to start doing the needful and relying less on our tailors and more importantly, we need to start changing our mindsets!  Who says things always have to remain the same way even if they seem to be working for you much less when they are not?!  There are always better ways to do things.  This is how it is always done does not mean it is right especially if you have evidence of the contrary.  It is simply a fallacy!

The truth is when you break up the whole process and everyone knows what they are meant to do then life will be easier and guess what?!  Work eventually becomes faster and you can more easily allocate your costs and charge better for your garments!

Here’s wishing you all the very best in the new week and hoping you do things differently!

I leave you with some pictures I took during my internship programme.  Yes this was a huge factory but I’m hoping this will stir us up to create our own small CMTs and hopefully we will begin to run proper garment manufacturing outfits in this environment!

Cheers!

OH… PS!  I have some machinists / joiners….looking for work.  Had to go to the middle of Lagos Island to look for unemployed youths who have taken the time to learn a skill and find jobs for them in the industry in a bid to alleviate poverty and make life easier for designers as well.  But guess what?  The same designers who are complaining have refused to give these people a chance.  But you know what?!  Someday, it will make sense!

So if you are a designer and you share my position and require machinists, please contact me.  Many thanks! 😀
