5 Rookie Mistakes to avoid when starting a Fashion Business

5 Rookie Mistakes to avoid when starting a Fashion Business

, iSo, you have creative ideas for your fashion brand and are looking to start a fashion business soon or might have already launched. If yes, that’s wonderful, but that stage you’re in is a delicate one.

An overwhelming number of fashion businesses fail during the first two years of operation, and roughly half of all of them don’t survive past the fifth year. These brands launch with so much enthusiasm and fire, but when you check back in a year or two, they seem like they’re barely surviving.

How do you successfully launch and grow? Here are 5 mistakes you should avoid when starting your fashion business.

1. Launching without learning, research & proper planning

I know you might be tempted to ‘wing it’ and start with whatever you think will be fast-selling, but that’s not the way to go about it. If you’re going to succeed in business, you need to do proper research and planning. Start by educating yourself about the fashion industry, learn about the creative, technical, and business side of fashion. Study other fashion businesses, find out where they excel, where they are lacking, and then you can now come up with a solid plan.

2. Trying to be for everyone

When it comes to business, you can’t please everyone, don’t even try to. Find out the gaps that exist in the market and select a niche. When you choose a target audience, make sure you stick to it. For instance, if you pick a large target market it won’t necessarily translate to more customers. You might have to spread yourself thin and under-deliver, so don’t be tempted to change your target market every three months because you think a different one is better.

3. Start too big

You don’t have to start with 30 styles, a professional photoshoot, or a big fancy store in Victoria Island, especially if all your money will be going into it. You need money to run and scale the business; if you expend all the money at the start, it will be hard to grow and scale the business.

4. Underpricing or overpricing your products

Pricing is a powerful yet overlooked pillar of every fashion business. Alot of new fashion business owners make the mistake of pricing their products too low, hoping to increase it after they get alot of customers. However, this plan usually backfires. You need to find the right price point, either by calculating or using a pricing tool. That is why, we created an affordable pricing calculator that does the job effectively.

It not only helps you know exactly how much to charge your customer but also enables you to analyze discounts, track expenses, and set targets for yourself. Awesome right?!

5. Failing to invest in marketing

The business world today isn’t what it was five years ago. There are thousands of fashion brands coming up with products just like you are. To reach your customers, you need to invest in marketing and brand awareness. They can’t find you where you are, that’s why you need to go to them. There are a variety of marketing strategies you can implement. You can try; influencer, affiliate, email, referral, and social media marketing. Pick anyone you think will be the right for your brand and get started. What other mistakes do you see new fashion business owners making? Let us know in the comments.

How to Use Storytelling to Sell Your Brand

How to Use Storytelling to Sell Your Brand

⁣One of the most effective business growth strategy you can use to grow your fashion brand has been around since the beginning of time.
Storytelling.

I particularly love telling stories, not because it’s a strategy (I never thought of it as one) but because it’s just who I am. I tell it the way it is. I guess when you have the passion for what you do, it goes beyond just making a sale but focusing more on how you add value to people & transform lives. The story just connects better.
⠀
Storytelling is a powerful strategy that you can implement in your business to market your brand and connect in a more organic and personal way with your audience. It is super effective because the buying process is not just a rational decision, it’s also an emotional one.⠀
⠀
To create a good story that can sell your business, there are three fundamentals steps;⠀
⠀
1.Position your customers as the heroes.⠀
You need to make your customers heroes in your stories, put your customer’s needs and desires front and center.⠀
⠀
2. Understand your customer’s pain points⠀
You want your customers to feel seen, heard and invited to drop the barrier that’s been holding them back from investing in your brand.⠀
⠀
3. Paint a happily ever after ⠀
What does life look like after they’ve made the purchase or used your service? Are they confidently striding into work with that beautiful dress they purchased from you? Create the ideal scene!⠀
⠀
Things are changing and we are moving into an era where you can differentiate yourself from others by delivering authentic and real messages. Use storytelling in your marketing, to give your customers a reason to care about your business.

Research your Competitors – Fashion Business Growth Tip

Research your Competitors – Fashion Business Growth Tip

⁣When you’re in business, chances are there are a ton of other businesses out there offering a similar product or service as you. Establishing an edge over these competitors is very important and you can do that by learning more about them.⠀

Researching your competitors is an essential tactic for finding out what your competitors are doing and what kind of threat they present to your financial well-being. After the research is carried out, you’ll have a better idea and understanding of what your competitors are doing. You’ll also be able to identify particular areas that need improvement and improve on areas in your business.

Now for us, we know the competition but we also try to find areas where we can collaborate on our areas of strengths and weaknesses as well. For example, @garmentproductionhouse, we pass on work to ‘competitors’ where we do not have the capacity or we are extremely overwhelmed. Others have passed on work to us as well. So we believe a lot in collaboration.

At the end of the day, competition is good because it keeps you on your feet. However, you cannot let other businesses the products to deliver if you want to become the industry leader. In simple terms, don’t wait for others to offer an innovative product and then jump on the same idea. Be unique, don’t copy, work on your product, do a lot of research and continue to be a step ahead of your competition.

Fashion Business: How to Find Your Best Ideas

Fashion Business: How to Find Your Best Ideas

Great ideas come and go, often they come in unexpected moments of inspiration. But what do you do when you need to come up with fresh ideas? How do you jumpstart the ideation process?

Here are a few ways to open up your mind and get your creative juices flowing.⠀

1) Take a walk

A change of scenery will do you a lot of good. It’ll help stimulate your senses, decrease stress, get your blood flowing and before you know it you'll probably be able to generate creative ideas.⠀

Fun Fact: Einstein walked on the beach when he needed to work out complex problems.⠀

2) Socialize more

Go out, meet new people, attend events, talk to people in and outside your industry or strike up conversations with customers you’re familiar with.⠀

It’ll help you learn more, generate new ideas and refresh your perspective.⠀

3) Keep an Idea Journal

You can never really predict the exact moment when a great idea will come to you, that's why it is essential to have a journal where you can record them.⠀Write everything down! No matter how silly it may appear. It helps you remember and develop fresh ideas from past recorded ones.⠀

4) Travel

‘The more you travel, the more learned you are’ – this old saying has proven to be true. And it doesn't have to be outside the country either.  Travelling helps you generate new ideas, knowledge and gain insight previously unattainable.⠀

5) Try out market research

Market research can prove invaluable in generating new ideas. It’ll help you find out exactly what your target market wants, key services/products you should be offering and how to get ahead of the competition.⠀

The best ideas come to you when you’re taking a shower or randomly surfing the web.  For me, it will be when taking a shower, driving or praying.  And that’s okay! The important thing is to find what works for you.  But it's also key not to try tooooo hard.  All thoughts and ideas become elusive when you try too hard.

idea-clipart-eureka-15

One thing I have also noticed, at least I can speak for myself, is that the best eureka ideas come from your frustration and your pain points.  Think of something that really really upsets you!  A real nag for you and that could just be it!

I have said this story too many times.  I went into fashion because I was tired of my tailor wrecking my clothes.  I said I would learn it and come back to teach her!  And that was it!

My sister came up with an idea of a food app because she never understood what the ingredients on her food labels were.  And really that is how it is.   Your best ideas come to you when you least expect it!  So be prepared when they come!

Business of Fashion – Tips for Developing a Fashion Business

Business of Fashion – Tips for Developing a Fashion Business

⁣The fashion world is constantly changing and the success rate of startups aren’t all that great. This doesn’t mean you can’t have a successful fashion business, though!⠀Here are useful tips that’ll help you develop your fashion business in 2020.⠀

Tips for Building Your Fashion Business

1. Know Your Target Audience

Without knowing your target customers or clients, you simply cannot move forward meaningfully when starting your fashion business. Remember that fashion industry and the market is vast, comprising of a wide section of the population from all ages and interests.⠀You need to have a customer avatar which tells you who they are, what they do, what they need, what their pain points are, where you can find them, etc.

You also need to have a product-market fit so your target audience know that they need your product as against you shoving what you have down their throats. Research is also key.  You need to narrow down your target audience.  You cannot produce for everyone so you need to specialize and determine the audience so you can target them.

⠀

2. Establish Your Brand

You should build up your brand reputation from the very beginning. This is mostly about how much trust people place in your brand name.  It is important to realize that the value of what you are providing must be easily identifiable.  Branding is not about having a fabulous website or fancy business cards.  Branding is what makes your company memorable and that is done by communicating the value you have at all times.

For example, it is not enough to say you just make clothes.  You can coin a slogan around customers being confident in your clothes.  Your product images must also clearly communicate that.  For example your models must exude confidence, can be boss ladies looking fabulous.  You must let the customer want to be in your clothes because they want to be boss ladies or men themselves.  You are selling VALUE not just an item of clothing.  Furthermore work on the product.  Let the product sell itself.  You must have a product to brand.  Starting a business is never about you but about the product.  If you are selling yourself as a thought leader, then you are the product.

⠀

3. Start With a Few Products

think big start small

Source: forbes.com

One of the key points to consider is to start with just a few products and more importantly test the market. Many small business owners work on many product lines, especially the ones I have met in this industry. Menswear, Womenswear, Childrenswear, Maternitywear, you name it, they do it. This is not a good strategy as it involves more time and money. And with time, you will burn out! Instead, start with one product line.  Aldo started with one pair of shoes and look at them today.  When you focus all your energy on one product line, then you begin to add more products within the same space as you expand.  You business will thank you for it.

⠀

4. Promote Your Brand Digitally

With the world becoming a global village, a lot of your target audience, particularly for the Fashion Industry,  are online.  Without utilizing digital marketing you are limiting your business. Primary digital marketing channels you should explore are email, content and social media marketing.⠀One thing though.... you must consistently test different marketing channels to know which is the most effective.  Things like Google Analytics tell you what is working and what is not.  And do not advertise just for the sake of it.  Be sure you are targeting the right people and driving the right traffic to your Instagram handle or page.  Else it is more money down the drain. I have learnt so much about digital marketing that now I know what works and what does not.  That is a whole new topic for another day but for now, get yourself and your business online!  And act fast as well!

5. Learn, Learn, Learn

Fashion Courses at Martwayne Fashion School

Just because you know about certain areas, doesn’t mean you should get complacent. You need to constantly learn, be ahead of the game and be able to adapt your business when needed to fit the market and what customers want.  Continue to test the market, continue to test your digital marketing processes, continue to test your processes and LEARN from them.  Invest in the knowledge you need to move your business forward.  I have since learnt that when you do not invest in the knowledge, you end up losing more money and your confidence level, than you would have if you had invested the money in the knowledge in the first place.

Furthermore, the skill alone will not move that business forward.  You need to know about the Business of Fashion as well, including vital areas like costing and pricing, tracking your business finances with an online accounting software, etc.  Our Online Fashion Entrepreneurship Course has these topics and is perfect for expanding your mind on the business sides of fashion.

Start now

You do not have to wait until you’re a 100% ready. Get crystal clear on exactly what you want and what you care enough about, that passion will help motivate you develop your Fashion business.⠀

Are you ready to start your fashion business or are you still figuring things out? Let’s discuss...⠀
